Portrait of Professor Benjamin H. Rand
Thomas Eakins Β· 1874
Why it's great
A man in a dark suit sits in a chair, with a serious face and a book. Thomas Eakins painted his friend, Professor Rand, a doctor and a teacher at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. The dark colors and honest face show Eakins's realism. It's a thoughtful portrait of a scientist.

Thomas Eakins was born in Philadelphia and lived there nearly all his life. He studied anatomy and photography so his paintings of people, rowers and surgeons would be true to life. His honest realism upset some people, but is now praised. He taught art in Philadelphia and died there in 1916.
