Pilgrimage to the Fountain of San Isidro
Francisco Goya Β· 1819
Why it's great
A group of people gather in a crowd on a hillside with their picnic baskets and flowers, at a festival near Madrid. Goya painted a bright, cheerful festival, as a design for a tapestry. The colors are fresh. It's a happy scene from 1700s Spain.

Francisco Goya was born in a small village in Spain and became the court painter to the Spanish kings in Madrid. After an illness left him deaf in his forties, his art grew darker and more personal. He witnessed war and cruelty and made powerful pictures about it. He spent his last years in Bordeaux, France, and is seen as a bridge between old masters and modern art.
