The Cyclops
Odilon Redon Β· 1914
Why it's great
A huge, one-eyed giant peeks over a hill at a sleeping sea nymph, in a landscape of dream-like colors. Odilon Redon painted a gentle, shy Cyclops. The colors are glowing and the mood is mysterious. It's an unforgettable fairy-tale vision.

Odilon Redon was born in Bordeaux, France, and spent most of his life in Paris. He began with strange, dreamlike black-and-white drawings, then later painted flowers and myths in luminous color. His art was admired by Symbolists and later by the Surrealists. He died in Paris in 1916.
