Cat and Bird
Paul Klee · 1928
Why it's great
A cat's face with a little bird on its forehead stares out with big green eyes. Paul Klee, a Swiss-German artist who loved cats, painted this in 1928 as a sort of dreamlike puzzle: is the bird inside the cat's head?

Paul Klee was born near Bern, Switzerland, to a musical family and was also a talented violinist. He taught at the Bauhaus, a famous art school in Germany, and later fled the Nazis to Switzerland. His playful, imaginative paintings use lines, colors and symbols as if they were music. He died in Switzerland in 1940.
