The Battle of Alexander at Issus

Albrecht Altdorfer Β· 1529

Why it's great

Thousands of tiny soldiers fight under a stormy sky, with the sun setting over a huge landscape of mountains and the sea. Albrecht Altdorfer painted it in 1529, and the famous battle was fought more than 1,800 years earlier.
