The Penitent Magdalen

Georges de La Tour Β· 1625

Why it's great

A woman sits at a table in the dark with a candle, a mirror and a skull, thinking quietly. Georges de La Tour painted it in about 1625, and the soft candlelight makes it feel calm and still.
