Church at Murnau
Wassily Kandinsky · 1910
Why it's great
The little town of Murnau in the Bavarian Alps, where Kandinsky and his partner Gabriele Münter spent summers, is shown with bright colors and simple shapes in 1910. The mountains and church tower are still there but they have turned into pure color, one step away from abstract painting.

Wassily Kandinsky was born in Moscow and trained as a lawyer before becoming a painter at age 30. He lived in Russia, Germany and later France. He is considered one of the first artists to paint truly abstract works, using color and shape like music. He died in Neuilly-sur-Seine, near Paris, in 1944.
