The Night Watch

Rembrandt Β· 1642

Why it's great

A company of citizen soldiers in Amsterdam marches out with a flag and drum, with a little girl glowing in gold in the middle. Rembrandt painted it in 1642, and the name comes from a dark layer of varnish, but it is really a daytime scene.
