Officer and Laughing Girl

Johannes Vermeer Β· 1658

Why it's great

A soldier in a big hat sits with his back to us, talking with a laughing young woman holding a glass, and a map is on the wall behind. Johannes Vermeer painted it in about 1658, and the bright light from the window falls on her.
